Key Concepts
Expressions (Lesson 1)
To evaluate expressions, use the order of
operations and properties.
Order of Operations
- Do all operations within grouping symbols first.
- Evaluate all powers before other operations.
- Multiply and divide in order from left to right.
- Add and subtract in order from left to right.
Sequences (Lesson 2)
- A sequence is an ordered list of numbers.
- Each number in a sequence is called a term.
- In an arithmetic sequence, each term is found by
adding the same number to the previous term.
An arithmetic sequence
+ 5
8, 13, 18, 23, ...
+ 5 + 5
Squares and Square Roots (Lesson 3)
- The square of a number is the product of a
number and itself. - A square root of a number is one of its two equal
factors.

Vocabulary Check
State whether each sentence is true or false.
If false, replace the underlined word or
number to make a true sentence.
- Numerical expressions have the same
value. - The coefficient of the expression 4n is 4.
- Two or more numbers that are multiplied
together are called powers. - A sequence is an ordered list of numbers.
- The product of a number and itself is the
square root of the number. - The number 3^3 is written in standard
form. - A square root of a number is one of its
three equal factors. - The expression 9^2 is read as nine squared.
