66 Expressions and Patterns
Patterns
PSI: Look for a Pattern (Lesson 2A)
Use the look for a pattern strategy to solve.
- GEOMETRY What are the next two figures
in the pattern shown below?
(^) 22. FOOTBALL Nick is practicing kicking field
goals for football tryouts. He makes 2 out
of 3 attempts. How many field goals
should Nick make after 15 attempts?
- AGES The table shows how Jarred’s age is
related to his sister Emily’s age. How old
will Emily be when Jarred is 25?
Emily’s Age (yr) 36912
Jarred’s age (yr) 7 101316
EXAMPLE 5 The table shows how to
convert cups to ounces. If you had
56 ounces, how many cups would you
have? Use the look for a pattern strategy.
Convert Cups to Ounces
Number of Cups Number of Ounces

216
324
Based on the table, there are 8 ounces for
every cup. So, 56 ÷ 8 is 7.
You would have 7 cups.
Sequences (Lesson 2B)
Describe the relationship between the
terms in each arithmetic sequence. Then
find the next three terms in each sequence.
- 3, 9, 15, 21, 27, ...
- 2.6, 3.4, 4.2, 5, 5.8, ...
- 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, ...
MONEY Tanya collected $4.50 for the first car
washed at a band fundraiser. After the
second and third cars were washed, the
donations totaled $9 and $13.50, respectively.
- If this donation pattern continues, what
algebraic expression can be used to find
the amount of money earned for any
number of cars washed? - How much money will be collected after
a total of 8 cars have been washed?
EXAMPLE 6 At the end of day 1, Sierra
read 25 pages of a novel. By the end of days
2 and 3, she read a total of 50 and 75 pages,
respectively. If the pattern continues, what
expression will give the total number of
pages read after any number of days?
Make a table to display the sequence.
Position Operation Value of Term
11 · 25 25
22 · 25 50
33 · 25 75
nn · 25 25 n
Each term is 25 times its position number.
So, the expression is 25n.
