A: One of my favorite places for
anything from the water is Pesce
in Dupont Circle. It’s casual but
smart — the menu is written on a
chalkboard — and chef-owner
Andrew LaPorta does amazing
things with fish. He uses sushi-

ASK TOM FROM 7 grade tuna for his tartare, brings
in delicacies such as wild Danish
turbot and makes a lovely goat
cheese cheesecake. I’m a big fan
of the walnut-crusted walleye
and the three-course lobster
special for $45. Depending on
the weather, you can dine on the
sidewalk.

Q: I realize this is out of your
primary area but can you
recommend a guide to
restaurants on the Eastern Shore
of Maryland?
A: Eastern Shore is part of my
territory, thank goodness. Before
the pandemic, I made the trek
across the bridge and dined at

Bas Rouge. Add it to your road
trip roster. The place is formal
but fun. Delicious, too.

Q: I’m meeting co-workers for
lunch and would like to dine on a
heated patio. We are open to all
cuisines and price points but
would like to stay close-ish to
downtown (Shaw, U Street, Penn
Quarter all okay). I’m having a
hard time finding places that are
open for lunch. Ideas?
A: Some of my favorite
restaurants in Penn Quarter are
open for lunch and offer outdoor
seating, including Rasika for
top-notch Indian and Jaleo for
Spanish small plates.

Q: I have an Emilie’s in-kind
account with a good amount of
money still left (purchased
ahead of the restaurant launch
when Kevin Tien was the chef).
It looks like the restaurant is
converting to a new name/
cuisine. I reached out to the
restaurant via email, but haven’t
heard back yet. What will
become of my account? I tried
not to use it during this
pandemic, but at this point, is it
use it or lose it? Could they
honor it at the new restaurant?
Should I just suck it up and
consider it gone?
A: Do you like tacos and

margaritas? Emilie’s has
morphed into Paraiso, with an
entirely different theme:
Mexican. Lucky for you — maybe
— the owners haven’t changed. It
wouldn’t hurt to explain your
situation — if anyone bothers to
respond — and see if you can use
your gift certificate. Good luck
there!

Q: My parents are celebrating
their 42nd wedding anniversary
and are looking to have a special
lunch on that Monday at a
restaurant with outdoor seating.
Their first thought was the
Wharf, but most places there are
closed on Mondays, and your fall
dining guide seems to point
elsewhere. Any places jump to
mind that are offering a great,
more “special occasion” lunch
during the pandemic? They love
all kinds of food.
A: The popular Le Diplomate is
open for lunch on Monday and
offers alfresco seating. Same for
the long-running Bombay Club
near the White House. Of the
spots that are open at that time
at the Wharf, there’s Mi Vida for
Mexican. I’m a fan of all three.
Wish your parents well for me.

Q: Just wanted to say that we
had a really great takeout
