Why it works
1) Central composition
2) Earthy, natural colours
3) Shallow depth-of-field

Whatwethink:Thisis a strikingsilhouette
and David's composition, position and timing
are spot on. Many would have shot this scene
in a single frame, but David explained that he
chose to blend two exposures: one for the
land and one for the upper part of the sky.
We're glad he did as the sun peeking through
the clouds adds extra interest to the frame
that he couldn't have captured in one shot.

Whatwethink:Nicole'simagehasa timeless
painterly quality to it – a combination of the
colours, toning and soft depth-of-field used.
The colours throughout are harmonious,
and Nicole's 135mm f/2 lens has created
fantastic subject separation, with the central
composition through the avenue of trees
framing her subjects nicely. The pose is
natural and the contact between the girl and
her dog reveals the bond between the two.

Whatwethink:Andy'slovelyportraitofa
female stonechat may not have grabbed
your eye at first, but take a bit longer to
admire it and you'll see what we see –
a nice, simple, classic wildlife portrait
captured with care and attention. The soft,
diffused and warm light has created a
balanced illumination of the bird and its
surroundings, and complements the
orange and brown tones throughout the
image. Andy has raised his ISO rating
slightly to achieve a fast shutter speed and
chosen a mid-aperture so the detail
captured is perfect, whilst the telephoto
lens has blurred the background
pleasingly. There's not much we can pick
fault with here – it's a clean image that
Andy should be proud of.
