gōngkè bùrú wǒ. I’m not as good as you are in sports, but you’re not as good as me in academic
work.
bùshǎo 不少 [modif: 不 not + 少 few, little] ADJ quite a few ■ 我在这个城市有不少好朋友。Wǒ zài
zhège chéngshì yǒu bùshǎo hǎo péngyou. I have quite a few good friends in this city. ■ 我做 了不
少解释,她还是不原谅我。Wǒ zuòle bùshǎo jiěshì, tā háishì bù yuánliàng wǒ. I have done much
explanation, but she still won’t forgive me.
bùshí 不时 ADV now and then, from time to time
bùtíng 不停 [modif: 不 not + 停 stop] ADV without let-up, incessantly ■ 雨不停地下了两天。Yǔ bùtíng
de xiàle liǎng tiān. It rained for two days without let-up.
bùtóng 不同 ADJ not the same, different ■ 人和 人不同, 不能比较。Rén hé rén bùtóng, bù néng bǐjiào.
People are different and cannot be compared. ■ 这两个字发音相同, 写法不同, 意思也不 同。
Zhè liǎng ge zì fāyīn xiāngtóng, xiěfǎ bùtóng, yìsi yě bùtóng. These two characters have the same
pronunciation but they are different in writing and meaning. ...和/跟...不同 ... hé/gēn...bùtóng ...
is/are different from ... ■ 我的意见跟他的意见不同。Wǒ de yìjiàn gēn tā de yìjiàn bùtóng. My
opinion is different from his.
bù xī 不惜 [modif: 不 not + 惜 grudge] V not hesitate, not spare 不惜工本 bù xī gōngběn spare neither labor
or money, spare no expense
bù xiāng shàng xià 不相上下 IDIOM equally matched, be same good as
bú xiànghuà 不像话 ADJ 1 unreasonable, unfair ■ 你这么说,不像话。Nǐ zhème shuō, bú xiànghuà.
It’s unreasonable of you to say so. 2 shocking outrageous
bú xiè yí gù 不屑一顾 will not spare a glance for
bùxíng 不行 V 1 will not do, be not allowed ■“妈妈,这个周末我带十几个同学来家里玩, 行不
行?”“不行。”“Māma, zhège zhōumò wǒ dài shí jǐ ge tóngxué lái jiāli wán, xíng bu xíng?”
“Bù xíng.” “Mom, may I bring a dozen classmates home for a party this weekend?” “No, you may
not.” 2 be no good (at something), be poor in ■ 我 的中文不行,请你多多帮助。Wǒ de
Zhōngwén bù xíng, qǐng nǐ duōduō bāngzhù. My Chinese is not good. Please help me. ■ 他体育很
好,但是功 课不行。Tā tǐyù hěn hǎo, dànshi gōngkè bùxíng. He is good at sports, but poor at
schoolwork.
búxìng 不幸 [modif: 不 not + 幸 fortunate] ADJ unfortunate ■ 这次交通事故死了一人,伤了三人,真
是一件不幸的事。Zhè cì jiāotōng shìgù sǐle yì rén, shāngle sān rén, zhēn shì yí jiàn búxìng de
shì. One person died and three were injured in this road accident, which is indeed an unfortunate
event.
Note: 不幸 búxìng is used to describe serious events or matters, often involving death. Do not use 不幸
búxìng for trivial matters. For example, even though in English it is acceptable to say, “Unfortunately, I
haven’t seen the film,” in Chinese it would be wrong to say 我不幸没有看过那个电影。Wǒ búxìng méiyǒu
kànguo nàge diànyǐng.


bùxǔ 不许 V not permit, not allow ■ 不许逃学。 Bùxǔ táo xué. Truancy is not allowed. ■ 爸爸不许
她和那个男孩出去玩。Bàba bùxǔ tā hé nàge nán hái chūqu wán. Father does not allow her to go
out with that boy.
bù yán ér yù 不言而喻 self-evident, it goes without saying
búyàojǐn 不要紧 ADJ unimportant, doesn’t matter
búyòng 不用 ADV no need, there’s no need, don’t have to ■ 如果你明天不舒服, 就不用来了。 Rúguǒ nǐ
míngtiān bù shūfu, jiù búyòng lái le. If you’re not well tomorrow, you don’t have to come. ■ 不用麻
烦了, 我们一会儿就走。Búyòng máfan le, wǒmen yíhuīr jiù zǒu. Don’t bother. We’ll be leaving
soon.
bù yóudé 不由得 ADV cannot but, cannot help, in spite of oneself
bù zé shǒuduàn 不择手段 IDIOM by fair means or foul, by hook or by crook
bùzhǐ 不止 ADV more than, not limited to
bùzú 不足 [modif: 不 not + 足 sufficient] ADJ inadequate, insufficient ■ 资金不足 zījīn bùzú insufficient
