hán 寒 ADJ cold
hánjià 寒假 [modif: 寒 cold + 假 holiday] N winter vacation ■ 中国的学校一般在一月开始放寒 假。
Zhōngguó de xuéxiào yìbān zài Yīyuè kāishǐ fàng hánjià. In China, schools generally begin their
winter holidays in January.
hánlěng 寒冷 [comp: 寒 freezing + 冷 cold] ADJ freezing cold ■ 加拿大北部天气寒冷,一年中 有半
年多下雪。Jiānádà běibù tiānqì hánlěng, yì nián zhōng yǒu bànnián duō xià xuě. North Cana- da

Hàn 汉 TRAD 漢 N the Han people
Hànyǔ 汉语 [modif: 汉 the Han people + 语 speech] N the language of the Han people, the Chinese
language ■ 你学了几年汉语了? Nǐ xuéle jǐ nián Hànyǔ le? How many years have you been
learning Chinese? ■ 我会说一点汉语。 Wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎn Hànyǔ. I speak a little Chinese.


NOTE:   In  Chinese there   are a   number  of  words   denoting    the Chinese language. 汉语 Hànyǔ literally    means
the language of the Han Chinese people, in contrast with the languages of the non-Han peoples in China.
汉语 Hànyǔ is therefore the accurate, scientific term for the language. However, the most popular term for
the Chinese language is 中文 Zhōngwén. In Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries, the standard
Chinese language is often referred to as 华语 Huáyǔ in contrast to the various Chinese dialects spoken

Hànzì 汉字 [modif: 汉 the Han people + 字 word, character] N Chinese character ■ 这个汉字我不认
