drives to a maximum raw capacity of 50TB, add this to the
20TB from the DS716+II and the total raw storage capacity
comes to an eye-watering 70TB. An exceedingly large amount
of storage space.

Within DSM 6.1 and the DS716+II you can find the usual
media server, photo station, audio station and backup add-on
packages, as well as the ability to transcode up to 4K
resolution content. You can also have access to the excellent
cloud station, web server and a surveillance station. There’s
even a Mail Server that will turn the DS716+II into a fully-
fledged email server and a VPN station for up to fifteen
simultaneous connections.

The design of the DS716+II is much in the same vein as the
other Synology desktop-type products. A sleek looking,
compact unit, measuring 157 x 103 x 232mm housed in a
matte black metal case with toughened plastic front and rear

faces. The drive bays are easily accessed via the push and
release clips at the front that allow you to slide the drive bay
out and fit, or replace, the hard drives. It’s a good design that
works well and can stand the test of time.

Fitting a couple of drives and getting them set up in a RAID
array is extraordinarily simple. Once you attach to the
DS716+II the DSM setup wizard walks you through the process
in a quick but intelligent fashion, offering you more advanced
options should you already know what you want. Within a
matter of ten minutes or so, our pair of 6TB test drives were
RAID 1 and ready for content, as was the DSM 6.1 desktop.

The Synology DS716+II is an exceptional NAS drive. It
performs magnificently, is fantastic value for money, priced at
roughly £390, and has more than enough scalability for the
business user to expand into. In short, it’s simply one the best
NAS models on the market for SMBs.
