1999-2009 EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION Continental Federations

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) is the
governing body of university sports on the African conti-
nent. Established in 1974 in Accra, the capital of Ghana, the
intention was to provide a platform for cooperation, mutual
friendship, brotherhood and peace through competition and
participation in sports between university students.
The first African University Games called the FASU games
were held in 1974. The FASU Games became the focal point
of University sport in Africa at the time, with the second
FASU games being held in Nairobi, Kenya in 1978. It then
seemed that the FASU games would be held every four years,
however this did not happen due to political and economic
turmoil which occurred at the time in various African coun-
tries. This resulted in a long lapse of no structured inter-
national African competition. In 2004, after 26-years of
no international competitions, members of various African
countries felt the need to revive FASU and especially the uni-
versity games. The third edition of the FASU Games was then
held in Bauchi, Nigeria in 2004.

With new enthusiasm and vigour, the 4th edition of the FASU
Games was held in the City of Tshwane, South Africa in
2006, 19 African countries participated in 12 sporting disci-
plines. The 5th edition of the FASU Games was held in the
City of Kampala, Uganda in 2008.
