n its fourth year EUSA put a clear mark in the sand in
terms of establishing a continental federation with 35 out
of a possible 48 member countries, a growing championship
and cups programme, a first permanent member of staff, its
second symposium and above all an increasing enthusiasm
amongst the players and volunteers.
With organisation of European University Championships
in Football in Rome, Italy and Karate in Podgorica, Serbia
and Montenegro, the number of championships organised
in 2003 reached four. The third editions of the European
University Championships in Basketball and Volleyball were
successfully organised in Novi Sad, Serbia and Montenegro
and Maribor, Slovenia. Together 720 students and officials
from 64 university teams participated in the championships.

The organisation of educational activities also successfully
paved the road, as the 2nd EUSA Symposium was held in
Crete, Greece. With 15 countries and 43 delegates present
the Symposium marked an important step forward for this
EUSA event. The four days spent in Crete allowed the par-
ticipants to study some key areas of student sports as well
as soak up the rich culture of the birthplace of Socrates,
the founder of the ancient Symposiums. The discussions fo-
cussed on the relevance of the Olympic Ideology in today’s
society, particularly student sports, so the theme was “Uni-
versities and Olympic Idea”.
In 2003 the Executive Committee met on four regular meet-
ings in Belgrade, Stockholm, Innsbruck and Ljubljana. One
extraordinary meeting was held during Winter Universiade in
Tarvisio. The main part of its activities the Executive Com-
mittee attributed to all the aspects of the successful running
of the EUSA Events. The Committee adjusted the Regulations
and hosting guidelines for the European University Champi-
onships. It also put four new sports on the European Univer-
sity Championships Program. As the activities increased a lot,
it was decided to hire Ms. Britt Dahmen from Germany as the
first EUSA employee in the office in Hannover.
