28 EUSA
first 10 years
1999-2009 EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION From foundation on
T
he year 2007 will be remembered mainly by the success-
ful organisation of twelve European Universities Cham-
pionships, FISU General Assembly in Bangkok that brought
recognition to the Continental University Sports Federations
and the elective EUSA General Assembly held in Belgrade.
The participation on the European Universities Champion-
ships continued to grow as 2800 participants and 361 uni-
versity teams from 36 countries took part on the events. All
the numbers represented the highest participation up to
then. The sports program was enlarged, as for the first time,
the European Universities Championships in Rugby 7’s and
Table Tennis were organised in Grenoble and Ostrava.
The EUSA Executive Committee met four times in 2007, in
Brussels, Magglingen, Lefkosia and Belgrade. One extraor-
dinary meeting was held during the Summer Universiade in
Bangkok. In the beginning of the year new members were
nominated to the Student Commission for the next two year
period. Ms. Iris Olberding was nominated as the chairwoman.
The third student commission’s main duty has been to con-
tribute to the achievement of the volunteer program, and to
its development with a constant growth of the applications.
In July, EUSA was a co-organiser of the International Semi-
nar on the University Sport that was held in Ljubljana, Slo-
venia. The event was organised under the patronage of FISU
in cooperation with the University of Ljubljana and the Slo-
venian University Sports Association. Around 50 participants
discussed the topics “The new FISU – The role of Europe and
Continental University Sports Federations”. The FISU General
Assembly held just prior to the start of the 24th Summer Uni-
versiade in Bangkok, Thailand brought significant changes to
the development of the continental federations. The modi-
fications to the FISU Statute brought Europe and other Con-
tinents a place in FISU Executive Committee which was not
anymore composed of the elected Members only, but also of
the Continental University Sports Federations Delegates. On
the proposal of Mr. George E. Killian, the General Assembly
also decided to financially support the continental activities
and projects.
The Russian Student Sports Union hosted the 5th EUSA Sym-
posium organised from September 27 to 30, 2007 in Mos-
cow, Russia. More than 30 participants from ten European
countries exchanged their experience of the organization of
student’s sports in their countries, and had a chance to ex-
plore the cultural and social life in the Russian capital.
