A History of Modern Europe - From the Renaissance to the Present

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

Acknowledgments

Charles Tilly died during the time I was working on the third
edition of A History of Modern Europe. His friends, colleagues, and former
students—I am all three—miss him very much. He taught me that it is bet¬
ter not to see history as a series of bins that one opens and then shuts
before getting on to the next topic, but rather to look for the big news, the
major themes, that have been the dynamics of change and provide revealing
continuities, even amid astonishing change. At the same time, he believed
in keeping ordinary people fully in view by analyzing, describing, and evok¬
ing their histories.
I remain indebted to many colleagues and friends who shared their knowl¬
edge, expertise, and suggestions with me, including David Underdown,
Laura King, Richard Brodhead, Daniel Orlovsky, Mark Steinberg, John
Lynn, Mark Micale, Linda Colley, Roberto Gonzalez-Echevarria, Ivo Banac,
Vincent Moncrief, Laura Engelstein, Geoffrey Parker, David Marshall, David
Bell, and my late friend Robin Winks. I also want to thank Jeffrey Burds,
Harold Selesky, Leslie Page Moch, Richard Stites, David Cannadine, Jim
Boyden, Paul Hanson, Michael Burns, Ivan Marcus, Thomas Kaiser, Christo¬
pher Johnson, Louise Tilly, Paul Monod, Judy Coffin, Mark Lawrence, John
