ThekoboldsrallytodefendKakarol.Whiletheyfightoff
intruders,Kakarolandhisinventorsmakerangedattacksfrom
therear.Ifthingslookdire,Kakarolthrowshimselfatthe
characters’mercy.

Kakarolwearsatorn, 6 - foot-longtapestryofamacaw
decoratedwithgarnetbeads( 75 gp)asacloak.Hishoard
contains 30 gp, 250 sp, 1 , 800 cp,acoloredglassstatuetteofa
dragonfly( 25 gp),fourbloodstones( 50 gpeach),andapotion
ofgreaterhealing.


Development
KakarolbelievesthatAcererakisgoingtotransformhimintoa
dragon.Assuch,thekoboldisarrogant,greedy,andvain—
traitsthatcanbeusedagainsthim.Heknowsnothingof
Acererak’strueaims,norhashebeentoldaboutthe
Soulmonger.Kakarol’skoboldsspyonmostotherfactionsin
thecity.Ifgiftedwithenoughtreasure,hecouldbecomea
usefulearlywarningsystemfortheadventurers.


16 .Papazotl’sShrine


Crocodileswallowinthismuddylakebed,fromwhich
risesawalledruin.Twocolumnsflanktheentrance,
carvedwithimagesofalong-leggedbirdwithaneedle-
likebeak.Atthebuilding’sfront,slimystepsascendto
anentryarch.

TheshrinetothetrickstergodPapazotl(representedby
aneblis)containsoneofninepuzzlecubesneededtoenterthe
TomboftheNineGods.Thewateraroundtheshrineis 2 feet
deep.


16 A.ShrineEntrance
Aplaqueabovetheshrineentrancedisplaysaninscriptionin
OldOmuan:“Papazotlteachesustobowbeforenoone.”
Characterswhorememberthecult’smottogainanedgewhen
theyexplorePapazotl’stombinchapter 5.
Fourhungrycrocodileslurkintheshrine’sflooded
courtyard.Thesecreaturesaretheoffspringofagiant
crocodilethatneststotherearoftheshrine.Ifthecharacters
attackthecrocodiles,theirmotherjoinsthefray 2 roundslater.
16 B.MosaicFloor
Mossclingstothestoneworkthroughoutthishall.The
mosaicfloordepictsatallbirdusingitslong,pointy
beaktopinamonstrousfrog-likecreaturewithtentacles
sproutingfromitsshoulders.Setintothefarwallisa
setofheavystonedoors.


ThemosaicshowsthetrickstergodPapazotl(aneblis)
fightinghisenemy,Kubazan(afroghemoth).Inscriptionsin
OldOmuansurroundthemosaic.Ifthecharacterstranslate
these,theylearnthestoryofhowKubazandisobeyedPapazotl
andwascursed(see“LegendoftheNineGods”).
Thedoorsarenotlockedbuthangheavyontheirhinges.
Eachdoorweighs 600 pounds,sooneormorecharactersmust
haveacombinedStrengthscoreof 20 orhighertoforceit
open.
16 C.ChamberofCommand

Mossclingstothestoneworkthroughoutthishall.The
mosaicfloordepictsatallbirdusingitslong,pointy
beaktopinamonstrousfrog-likecreaturewithtentacles
sproutingfromitsshoulders.Setintothefarwallisa
setofheavystonedoors.

Theanswertotheriddle(“ashadow”)isacluetofinding
thesecretchamber(area 16 D).Ifacharacterholdsalight
sourceclosetothestatuewiththeheadofabat,acrawlway
appearsinitsshadow.Thecrawlwayentranceisotherwise
hiddenbehindanillusorywallthatcanbedispelledwitha
dispelmagicspell.Thecrawlway,whichis 2 feetwideand 3
feethigh,leadstoarea 16 D.
PuzzleCube.Ifacharactersearchesthepedestal,they
discovertheoutlineofastonehatchonitsuppersurface.No
matterhowhardthecharacterstry,theycannotprythehatch
open.Papazotl’spuzzlecubewithinonlyemergeswhenallsix
statuesareblindfolded(seearea 16 D).Whenthisoccurs,read:

thelettersfromtheriddleinarea 16 Careenteredintothegrid
(minusspaces),thelettersinthedarkenedsquaresspellout
