psychicdamage.Destroyingthepaneldisablesthecontrols
andcausesarcsoflightningtomomentarilyeruptfromthe
ironlectern.EachcreatureintheroommustsucceedonaDC
16 Dexteritysavingthroworbestruckbylightning,taking 11
( 2 d 10 )lightningdamage.
Thecontrolsatoptheironlecternhavenolabels,sotheir
purposemustbediscoveredwithexperimentation.
BlueDial.Thisdialcanbeturnedtotheleftorright,andit
snapsbacktocenterifreleased.Thebluedialdetermines
whichwallcrystalislit.Currently,thecrystalunder
configuration 3 isilluminated.Ifthedialisturned,the
currentlylitcrystalgoesoutandthecrystaltotheleftorright
(thedirectionthedialisturned)lightsup.
BlueButton.Pushingthebluebuttonorientsthecog
rooms(areas 58 through 60 )tomatchwhichever
configurationhasitscrystallit.Theentireleveltremblesasthe
giantcogsrotate.Ifthebluebuttonispushedwhilethecog
roomsarerotatingoralreadyintheirproperconfiguration,
nothinghappens.
GoldLever.Theleverbeginsintheupposition.Ifpulledto
thedownposition,theleverlocksinplaceandabolethslime
(see"AbolethSlime")beginstopourintotheroomthroughthe
ironpipesabovethewallengraving.Ifthepipesareplugged
withclothbeforetheleverispulled,theslimeisprevented
fromflowingintotheroom,butthepipescan’tbestuffed
whileslimeispouringoutofthem.
Theslimecoversthefloortoadepthof 1 inchperround.If
thecrawlwaytoarea 70 isexposed(see“ConcealedCrawlway”
above),theslimedoesnotaccumulateintheroomandinstead
poursintothecrawlspace.
Thelever’slockingmechanismcanbereleasedwitha
successfulDC 15 Dexteritycheckmadebyacharacterusing
thieves’tools.Ifreleased,theleverautomaticallyshiftstothe
upposition,shuttingthevalvesinthepipesandstoppingthe
flowofslime.Thelevercanbetornfromtheconsolewitha
successfulDC 15 Strength(Athletics)check,whichhasthe
sameeffect.
Thegoldleverhasanotherfunction,whichisrevealedin
area 67.
RedButton.Pushingtheredbuttoncausesa 6 - inch-thick
wallofirontodropfromtheceilinginthedoorway,sealingoff
theeastexit.Anycreatureinthedoorwaywhenthewalldrops
mustmakeaDC 15 Dexteritysavingthrow.Onasuccessful
save,thecreatureispushedtoonesideofthebarrierorthe
other(itschoice).Onafailedsave,thecreatureispinned
underthewall,fallsprone,andtakes 44 ( 8 d 10 )bludgeoning
damage.Apinnedcreatureisrestrained,can’tstandup,and
takes 11 ( 2 d 10 )bludgeoningdamageatthestartofeachofits
turnsuntilitcrawlsoutfromunderthedoororanother
creaturepullsitfree,eitherofwhichrequiresanactionanda
successfulDC 25 Strength(Athletics)check.Theironwall
remainslockedinplacefor 1 hour,afterwhichitrisesback
intotheceilingonitsown.Itcan'tbeliftedorpriedopen,
thoughaknockspellcausesittoretractintotheceiling.While
theironwallisdown,pushingtheredbuttonhasnoeffect.
RedDial.Thisdialcanbeturnedtotheleftorright,andit
snapsbacktocenterifreleased.Turningthedialtotheleft
establishesatwo-waytelepathiclinkbetweenthecreaturesin
thisroomandtheabolethinarea 65 .Turningthedialtothe
rightendsthelink.Thetelepathiclinktotheabolethalsoends
foranycreaturethatleavesthecontrolroom.Becausethe
communicationistelepathic,allparticipantscanunderstand
oneanothereveniftheydon’tspeakthesamelanguage.
Roleplaytheabolethusingtheinformationinarea 65.
TheabolethisaccustomedtospeakingonlywithWithers
andreferstothewightbyhisoriginalnameofGorra.Ifthe
charactersactivatethetelepathiclink,thefirstthoughtthe
abolethsendsisanexasperated,“Whatnow,Gorra?”Oncethe
abolethrealizesit’stelepathicallylinkedtostrangers,itwants
toknowallaboutthemfornoreasonotherthantosatisfyits
curiosity.
