rift(area 5 ).


Acolumnofrockrises 200 feetabovethelava.Awalled
ruinovergrownwithpalmsperchesonthesummit.

Atitsnarrowestpoint,thegulfbetweentheshrineandthe
restofthecityis 60 feetwide.Characterswithropeand
grapplinghookscanthrowalineacrossthegap.
TheshrinetothetrickstergodMoa(representedbya
jaculi)containsoneofninepuzzlecubesneededtoenterthe
TomboftheNineGods.


6 A.ShrineEntrance

Palmtreesgrowinfrontofthissquatbuilding,and
wornstepsascendtoanarchwaythatformsthe
entrance.Reliefsofcoiledserpentsflanktheentrance.

Fourjaculis(seeappendixD)lurkinthecourtyard,using
theircamouflagetohidewhilecoiledaroundtreetrunks.Ifthe
charactersenterthecourtyard,thejaculisspringforthand
attack.


6 B.TrappedPassage

Thewallsofthisrubble-strewncorridorarecarvedwith
serpents,andarrowslitsarespacedalongthemevery 5
feet.Cobwebsfillthearrowslitsandhanglikedrapes
fromthecorridorceiling.Abovetheentrance,astone
plaquebearsacuneiformmessage.
ThemessageontheplaqueiswritteninOldOmuanand
reads,“Moateachesusthatsecretshidethetruth.”Explorers
mustheedthismessagetofindtheshrine’spuzzlecube.
Thearrowslitsare 6 incheswide, 2 feettall,and 1 foot
deep.Acharacterwhopeersthroughanarrowslitafter
clearingoutthecobwebscanseeintotheroombeyond(area
6 D),providedthecharacterhasalightsourceorcanseeinthe
dark.
Pits.Threecoveredpitsarespacedalongthecorridorin
thepositionsmarkedXontheshrinemap.Theircovers
remainlockeduntilthepuzzlecubeismovedfromthe
pedestalinarea 6 C.Thereafter,acreaturesteppingonapit
covercausesittoswingopenandfallsinunlessitsucceedson
aDC 15 Dexteritysavingthrow.Eachpitis 10 feetdeepand
hasapatchofgreenslime(seechapter 5 oftheDungeon
Master’sGuide)atthebottomofit.
Acharacterwhosearchesthehallwayfloorfortrapsfinds
apittrapwithasuccessfulDC 15 Wisdom(Perception)check.
Thelidsarecleverlyconstructedandcanbejammedshutonly
byusingmagicsuchasanarcanelockspell.
6 C.ChamberofDeception
Inthemiddleofthisroom,astonecuberestsonaplain
stonepedestal.Statuesoftwelvetribalwarriorsjutfrom
thesurroundingwalls,aimingbowsatthepedestal.The
floorinfrontofthepedestalbearsamosaicdepictinga
monstrousserpentconstrictingafuriousmonkey.Moss
obscuresmuchofthedetail.
ThemosaicshowsMoa(ajaculi)fightingWongo(asu-
monster).Ifacharacterpeelsthemossaside,theyuncoverthe
followingmessagewritteninOldOmuan:“Deathrewardsa
thiefdeceived.Truthcomesfromtheserpent’smouth.”


Anotherinscriptionencirclesthefloorandtellsthestoryof
howMoaupheldthetruthtoUbtaoandbetrayedWongo’s
trust(see“LegendoftheNineGods”).
Thepuzzlecubeonthepedestalisillusory,thoughitfeels
realtothetouch.Adetectmagicspellorsimilareffectreveals
anauraofillusionmagicaroundthecube.Whentakenfrom
theshrine,itvanishesinapuffofgreensmoke.Ifacreature
removesthepuzzlecubefromthepedestalortriestodamage
oneofthestatues,thearchersanimateandopenfireonall
creaturesintheroom.Thearcherscandetectthepresenceof
creatureseveniftheyareinvisible.Beforetheyopenfire,
arrowsmagicallyappearintheirbows.Thearchersremain
animatedfor 1 hour,afterwhichtheyreverttotheirinanimate
state.
Thetwelvearchersactoninitiativecount 20 .Onitsturn,a
statueshootsonearrow(+ 6 tohit).Acreaturehitbyanarrow
takes 5 ( 1 d 8 + 1 )piercingdamage.EachstatueisaMedium
objectwithAC 17 ; 30 hitpoints;immunitytobludgeoning,
piercing,andslashingdamagefromnonmagicalattacks;and
immunitytopoisonandpsychicdamage.
SecretDoors.Characterswhosearchthewallsforsecret
doorsfindoneoneachsideoftheentrancetunnelwitha
successfulDC 12 Wisdom(Perception)check.
6 D.WesternSecretRoom

Astatueofacoiledserpentdominatesthisweb-filled
room.Thestatueismissingitshead,whichliesbroken
onthefloornexttoastonecube.
Thestatueis 7 feettallwithoutitshead.Thepuzzlecube
lyingonthefloornexttothehead’sshatteredremainsisfake
andvanishesinapuffofgreensmokewhentakenfromthe
shrine.Bringingitintoarea 6 Cactivatesthestatuesthere.
6 E.EasternSecretRoom

Alargestatueofacoiledserpentdominatesthisweb-
filledroom.Clutchedinthestatue’sjawsisastone
cube.
Thestatueis 8 feettallandharmless.
PuzzleCube.ThecubeisMoa’spuzzlecube.Itcanbe
removedfromthestatue’sjawsandtheshrinesafely.

7 .FallenTree


Afallentreebridgestheriverahead.Itstrunkiswider
thanamanandstretchesmorethan 100 feet.Onboth
bankslieruinedbuildings.
AnelderlytabaxihunternamedBagofNailsambushesthe
charactersiftheytrytofordtheriverhere.Thefallentrunkis
wideenoughfortwoMediumcreaturestopasseachother
safely.Underthetree,thewaterchurnstowardthefalls 200
feetdownriver.Acreaturethattumblesintotheriverortries
toswimacrossitmustsucceedonaDC 14 Strength(Athletics)
checktoreachthebank.Ifthecheckfails,thecurrentpullsthe
creaturetowardthefallsataspeedof 50 feetperround.
BagofNails
BagofNailsyearnsforahunter’sdeath.Senilityhastakenhold,
andnowheseesallcreaturesashisprey.
Whenthecharactersarrive,BagofNailsishidingina
ruinedbuildingontheeastbankoftheriver, 150 feetfromthe
fallentree.Tospothim,acharactermustsucceedonaDC 22
Wisdom(Perception)check.Whenacharactercrossesthe
bridge,BagofNailsopensfire.Aftereachshot,heleapsacross
therooftopstoanewfiringpositionandtriestohide.
