Australasia

Four quality magazines published by the New South Wales Department of School
Education in Australia are distributed through schools. They are all general-interest
magazines with emphasis on literature: Countdown, Blast Off, Orbit, and Touchdown.
Each title is for a different age group, within the range of 6–14. Other Australian
magazines are Eyespy (8–12), which presents environmental and natural science to
children and also publishes children’s contributions and letters. Puffinalia (6–16) is
based on the Puffin Club that was started by Kaye Webb in Britain in the 1960s.
In Indonesia, Bintang Kecil (6–10) is a general-interest magazine.
The Department of Education in Wellington, New Zealand, publishes School Journal,
an excellent literary magazine for 7 to 13-year-olds. It was founded in 1907 and
continues to be used in classrooms. It is published for four different age levels.

Central and South America

Compared to other areas, there are very few quality children’s magazines in Central and
South America. In Bolivia there is Chaski (6–14), a general-interest magazine, which
includes literature, fantasy, and science, and also publishes children’s contributions.
Chiquirin is published in Guatemala. In Uruguay, El Grillo [The Cricket] (10–12) is a
school publication, as are La Nave Oikos [The Ship Oikos] (9–15) and Moñita Azul [Little
Blue Monkey] (3–12). Arco Iris (Rainbow) (8–12) was founded in Venezuela in 1986. It is a
general-interest magazine and includes children’s letters. In Brazil, the Brazilian Society
on the Progress of Science publishes Ciência Hoje das Crianças [Children’s Science
