Western – Th e most distinctive fi lm genre to many viewers, the western is
understood to be a motion picture set in the western continental United
States or a region resembling it during the time period of the settling of the
American frontier (generally the second half of the nineteenth century). Th e
stories and themes of westerns revolve around the conquering and settling of
the Western United States by white Americans and involve confl icts among
these settlers (oft en cowboys and outlaws) and between them and Native
Americans.
