242 Moving Images: Making Movies, Understanding Media

Project: Documentary

From the draft ed preparations of your Writing exercise in this chapter, you will
produce a documentary motion picture. If your initial work does not lead to a
feasible project, you may shift strategies or embark on a project that is diff erent
from what was outlined in your preparatory writing. If you start a new topic
at this time for this exercise, make sure that you are suffi ciently prepared to
complete the motion picture by any deadlines set for the project.
A. Guidelines – Compile the following information to initiate your
project.


  1. Class members will share topics during collaboration sessions
    supervised by the instructor. Diff erent class members can
    discussion cooperative work or interest generated by various
    proposals.

  2. Students are advised to work in groups of two or three,
    although some projects are well suited to be completed by a
    fi lmmaker working alone. If working in a pair or small team,
    tasks must be specifi cally delineated prior to production.
    Here are sample tasks for a documentary that will be
    designated during shoot preparations:
    a. Writing / Research
    b. Cinematographer
    c. Sound recordist / designer
    d. Director / Interviewer
    e. Editor

  3. Th is fi lm is to be a minimum of eight minutes in length, and
    a maximum of twenty minutes. If a diff erent length is desired
    or necessary for your topic, you must secure approval from
    your instructor.
    B. Regulations – At the outset of this class, there were basic guidelines
    established for your exercises. For documentary work, here are
    additional guidelines that will be discussed with your instructor:

  4. You must obtain permission to record images of the people
    appearing in your video, in addition to shooting in any public
    or privately owned space. For a ticketed event, make sure that
    information is printed on the ticket that indicates consent to
    the use of their image, or post a sign at the entrance to the
    venue in consultation with the responsible parties.

  5. Students will aff ord each other and their subjects with the
    same respect that they are expected to do while interacting
    appropriately in person. Th e produced video will not be
    used to misrepresent or malign the reputation of any of the
    involved individuals.
