The first public opera house in Germany, the Opern-Theatrum, opened on 2 January
1678; it was known as the Gänsemarkt (Goosemarket); closed in 1738, demolished in

    1943; a new house opened in 1955, under the direction of Günther Rennert; Rolf
    Liebermann was director from 1959 to 1973, succeeded by Götz Friedrich.
