Hannover (English: Hanover)
Opera was presented in the ducal palace from 1689 until the structure was demol-
ished in 1854. The Grosse Schlosstheater opened in 1689, closed in 1714. A new
house opened in 1818, named in 1837 the Hofoper. Another building, Königliche
Hoftheater, became Städtliches Opernhaus in 1921, was destroyed in 1943, and
rebuilt and opened in 1950. In 1970 it became the Niedersächische Staatstheater.

a new building, the Opernhaus, opened in 1959. This book gathers studies by
various authors dealing with all historical periods; plays, operas, and operettas
are discussed. A list of the most performed operas since 1814 is included. Bib-
liography of about 100 entries, name and subject index.
Leipzig
The first opera house opened in 1693. The Schauspielhaus opened in 1766, was
rebuilt 1817, and named Stadttheater. The Neues Stadttheater of 1867 was destroyed
in 1943 and rebuilt as Opernhaus in 1960.
