New York City SHSAT 2017

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1
L L

We know from the last two sentences that Marion is going to stop at the drug store first and make the third and the fifth stops
her post office/library stops. Whether she goes to the post office or the library first is not a question we can answer.
However, we also know that she has to go to the bank before she goes to the supermarket. Since there are only two spots left,
she must go to the bank second and the supermarket fourth:

D B PO S PO
L L

(B) is therefore correct. Choices (A), (C), and (D) are wrong because none of them absolutely has to be true (since the
positions of the post office and library are interchangeable). Choice (E) is wrong no matter what; from the diagram, we can
see that Marion has to stop at the bank before she stops at the post office.

F
This question requires you to set up two diagrams:

Salary Benefits
higher lower more fewer
Statement 1: A B A D
Statement 2: A C A C
Statement 3: D B B A

It’s pretty hard to combine the salary information into anything more substantial. A is higher than B and C, but we don’t know
the order of B and C; B is less than A and D, but we don’t know the order of A and D. This rules out choices (G) and (K).
With benefits, however, we can learn a bit more from the diagram. If B is more than A, which is more than both C and D, then
B must offer the most benefits (F). This also rules out (H). Choice (J) is wrong because there is no way to know whether C
has fewer benefits than D or vice versa.

It will take Michael four years to complete college. Since Jamie is two years behind Michael, he will have finished two
years of college when Michael graduates. Thus it will take Jamie two more years to finish (4 + 2 = 6 years total so far for
Michael and Jamie). At the end of this six years, when Jamie graduates, John will have completed only one year of college
since he is three years behind Jamie. It will take John three years to graduate, so the grand total comes to 6 + 3 = 9 years for
all three brothers to finish college.
