(A) what perspective does the writer expand
on in this paragraph: The idea that video
games are violent and a bad influence on kids.
The author disagrees with this perspective
in the subsequent paragraphs. So yes, (A) is
probably the right answer. But let’s check the
others just in case.
(B) the author doesn’t get personal and there
is no graphic detail.
(C) The topic of the first paragraph is video
games, not modern parenting.
(D) The first paragraph is not about creating
video games. It is about a particular response
to video games.
(E) The concern is not limited to parents, and
there is nothing playful about that concern.

Which of the following is the best version
of the underlined portion of sentence 11
(reproduced below)?

No doubt, video game players recognize the
violent actions of modern day video game
characters, they are reminiscent of those of
classic cartoon characters, such as Wile E.
Coyote, created by the late Chuck Jones.

(A) (as it is now)
(B) characters, they would be
(C) characters; they were
(D) characters for being
(E) characters as

Did you notice the run-on created in the given
sentence? Spot the visual (“...characters, they
are...”) No doubt, video game players
recognize the violent actions of modern day
video game characters is an independent
clause that stands on its own, and they are
reminiscent of those of classic cartoon
characters, such as Wile E. Coyote, created
by the late Chuck Jones is also a complete
sentence. We need to add a conjunction after
the comma, replace the comma with a
semi-colon or period, or turn the second
phrase into a dependent clause. Eliminate (A)
and (B), which are both run-ons.

(C) fixes the run-on by inserting a semi-colon,
but changes the tense to past tense (were). The
sentence discuses modern day video game
characters so we need the present tense.
Eliminate (C).
(D) has a “being.” Eliminate (D).
(E) can something be recognized as
reminiscent of something else? Absolutely.
(E) fixes the run-on by adding the conjunction
“as.”

In context, which of the following is the
best way to revise the underlined portion of
sentence 12 (reproduced below)?

Jones will see traces of his characters in the
antics of the Grand Theft Auto players.

(A) However, Jones might have seen
(B) Likewise, Jones can see
(C) In addition to this, Jones would see
(D) Jones could have seen
(E) Jones, too, would see

At first glance, it is difficult to spot the error
with this sentence. Skim the answer choices,
and notice the however, likewise, in addition to
this, and too. Must have something to do with
transitions, so let’s read sentence 11 as well.

(11) No doubt, video game players recognize
the violent actions of modern day video game
characters, they are reminiscent of those of
classic cartoon characters, such as Wile E.
Coyote, created by the late Chuck Jones. (12)
Jones will see traces of his characters in the
antics of the Grand Theft Auto players.

Ask: Is sentence 12 going in the same direction
as sentence 11 or does it flip direction? The
same! The characters are reminiscent is along
the same lines as Jones will see traces of his
characters in the antics of Grand Theft Auto
players. So we don’t want a conjunction that
flips the direction. Eliminate (A).
