Africa
This continent is so large and has so many different
habitats, it feels as if there are several Africas, not
just one. With deserts and rain forests, mountains
and grasslands, Africa is home to some of the best-
known—and most endangered—species on Earth.
South African fynbos
The southwest tip of South
Africa is covered with
shrubs and heathland
known as fynbos. Animals
such as tortoises, frogs, and
small baboons live among
the 9,000 plant species that
grow here. That’s more
plant species than in South
America’s Amazon rain forest!
African savanna
Africa’s tropical grassland
is known as savanna. It is often
what people think of when they
imagine Africa: vast, open, grassy
plains. Lots of hoofed animals live
here, moving around in search of
fresh grass—or, in the giraffe’s
case, tender acacia leaves to eat. N
