CAIROThe largest city in Africa is Cairo, the capital of

Egypt, with a population of more than 18 million. Here, Arab, African, and European influences exist alongside more traditional Egyptian customs.

THE DINKA OF SOUTH SUDANThere are more than 500 tribes in Sudan and South Sudan. They speak more than 100 languages and dialects. Like many tribal people here, the Dinka are nomadic – their cattle graze on the plains east of the Nile. Cattle are central to their lives – young Dinka men officially become adults with an initiation ceremony in which they are given

an ox of their own.

MOUNTAIN GORILLASThe Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is one of the few places where you can still see a mountain gorilla (right) in the wild. These animals are threatened with extinction because of poachers and the destruction of their habitat. Tanzania and Kenya also have many important game reserves, which preserve the wildlife of the savanna.

RELIGIOUS BELIEFSThe Ethiopian Orthodox Union Church has existed

since the 4th century

ce

. It is

a branch of the Coptic Church and mixes Christian beliefs, such as Catholic saints, with some traditional African spiritual beliefs.

TEA IN KENYAKenya is an important world producer of tea, which is grown on plantations in the highland areas (such as this one below). High rainfall here ensures a good crop. Coffee is also a valuable export.

Kenyan workers carefully select tea leaves for picking.

Water makes up
almost one-fifth of

the surface area

of Uganda.
