The countries of spain and portugal share an area of land

called the Iberian Peninsula. In the north, this land is cut off from the

rest of Europe by the Pyrenees Mountains, while to the south, it is

separated from Africa by the Strait of Gibraltar. The region was once

ruled by Islamic people from north Africa, known as the Moors.

Evidence of their culture can still be seen in buildings in the

cities of Andalucía. The Moors were eventually defeated in

1492 and, for a while, Portugal came under Spanish control,

as did much of Europe. During the 20th century, both

countries were ruled by brutal

dictatorships, which were

overthrown in the 1970s.

They are now modern

democracies and popular

tourist destinations.

FISHING

SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

fishing industries with large-scale fleets

and many smaller local fleets. However,

overfishing along Portugal’s coast and out

in the north Atlantic has put many people’s

livelihoods at risk. Spain is still one of Europe’s

top fishing nations, with catches of fish,

molluscs, and crustaceans reaching around

1,100 tons per year.

LISBON

Portugal’s capital city

is Lisbon, which is

situated at the mouth

of the River Tagus on

a series of steep hills

and valleys. In 1755,

two-thirds of the

city was completely

destroyed by an

earthquake and tidal

wave but was rebuilt

with beautiful squares

and public buildings.

Many explorers have set

sail from Lisbon in their

quest to find new lands.

HARVESTING CORK

Cork is made from the outer bark

of the evergreen cork oak tree.

The bark is carefully stripped

off, flattened, laid out in sheets,

and then left to dry. The cork

is used for many products,

such as stoppers for wine

bottles, matting, and tiles.

Portugal is the world’s

leading exporter of cork.

Trams are a feature of Lisbon

streets and a popular form of

transportation for both the

locals and tourists.

Spanish families tend to

eat dinner late, at around

9 pm. So after school,

children eat a snack

called a merienda.
