Explicit form ula (p. 276) An explicit formula expresses the
nth term of a sequence in terms of n.

Formula explicita (p. 276) Una formula explicita expresa
el n-esimo termino de una progresion en funcion de n.
Example Let an = 2n + 5 for positive
integers n. If n = 7, then
a 7 = 2(7) +5 = 19.

Exponent (p. 10) A number that shows repeated
multiplication.

Exponente (p. 10)
multiplicarse.

Denota el numero de veces que debe

Example 34 = 3 • 3 • 3 • 3
The exponent 4 indicates that 3 is
used as a factor four times.

Exponential decay (p. 462) A situation modeled with a
function of the form y = at/, where a > 0 and 0 < b < 1.

Example y=5(0.1)x

Decremento exponencial (p. 462) Para a > 0 y
0 < b < 1 , la funcion y = at/ representa el decremento
exponencial.

Exponential function (p. 453) A function that repeatedly
multiplies an initial amount by the same positive number. You
can model all exponential functions using y = at/, where a
is a nonzero constant, b > 0 , and b + 1.

Example

Exponential growth (p. 460) A situation modeled with a Increm ento exponencial (p. 460) Para a > 0 y b > 1, la
function of the form y = atZ, where a > 0 and b > 1. funcion y = at/ representa el incremento exponencial.
Example y= 100(2)*

Extraneous solution (p. 635) A solution of an equation Solucion extrana (p. 635) Una solucion extraha es una
derived from an original equation that is not a solution of the solucion de una ecuacion derivada que no es una solucion
original equation. de la ecuacion original.
Example ^ = 3 -^ _

b = 3{b + 4) - 4 Multiply by (b + 4).
b = 3b+ 12-4
-2b = 8
b = - 4
Replace b with -4 in the original
equation. The denominator is 0, so
-4 is an extraneous solution.
