Don’t judge Internet Explorer
users
What a snottyStar Email from Shaun
Mitchell in Issue475 (‘Whostill uses
Internet Explorer?’).People should be
able to use whatever br owser theywant,
and if theyfeel comfortable with Internet
Explorer, then who arewe to judge them?
Just because IE isn’t ascool as Chrome
or as edgy asEdge doesn’t mean it
doesn’t have its benefits. Myfather still
uses Windows 7, so he can’t useEdge
even if hewantedto, but he knows what
he’s doing with IE and as long as he
keeps his antivirus software upto date,
I don’t see a problem. He doesn’t bother
with browser extensions and doesn’t
needto sy nc data across devices, so
Internet Explorerworks just fine.
Perhaps Mr Mitchell shouldconsider
being less judgmental. Ifeveryone used
the same software as him, itwould bea
very boringworld.

Flushed with gratitude
Thank you for therecommendation of
the public-toilet finding app Flush (bit.ly/
flush4 75 ) in Issue475. I’ve tried several
of these apps before, but thiswas one of
the better ones, although it
did fail to flag thattoilet
facilities areavailable inmy
local Morrisons supermarket.
Some of the listings lack
information butat least
Flush is easyto use.

Oversharing online isn’t
worth the risk
BarryCollins is quite right in hiscolumn
in Issue475, ‘The biggest threatto your
privacy isyou’. I’ve lost track of the times
I’ve hadto warn my friends about them
oversharing personal details on
Facebook – photos
showing off thecontents
of their houses, the
names of their kids and
the schools they goto,
the exact dates they’ll be
awayon holiday. Is it
really worth putting the safety ofyour
home andfamily at risk, justto impress
people on social media? Anythingyou
post online is public and accessible to
any passingcybercriminal who can see
your ac count. Itreally isn’tworth the risk.

REYOU TEMPTEDBY
GOOGLE’S NEW LOW-PRICE
PIXEL PHONE (SEE REVIEW ON
PAGE 22)?

I’m quite happy withmy Samsung
Galaxy Note 3. It’s about sixyears old
but itstill works perfectly.
Gerrit Max

I’m still usingmy Nexus 6, which is
goingstrong after fiveyears (cross
fingers). The only thing I miss are the
automatic updates – I’mstuck on7.1.1.
I could load a custom ROM but it’s not
that important.Keep your phones
folks. Save money and save the planet!
Iain Kenworthy-Neale

No, becausewe have to stop this
continuingcycle ofyearly upgrades.
It’s unnecessary and environmentally
unfriendly.Companies who pump out
barely different models eachyear
should bear part of theresponsibility
for this problem.
Glenn Faulkner

No. I don’t buy a new phone any more
frequently than I do a new pair of
trousers, which isevery fiveyears.

ILLYOU TRY MICROSOFT’S
REBUILT EDGE BROWSER,
WHEN IT’S OFFICIALLY
RELEASED?

Yes. I’m using the developerversion
right now and it seemsfaster than
Chromeby a long shot. I didn’t like
the oldEdge at all. Load timeswere
slow, but this newEdge isreally solid.
Jarrod Ushkowski

There’s no point if it’s just arebranded
Chrome browser. I’llstick to the real
thing.
Martin Phillp

Nope, gave up onEdge years ago.
Firef ox offers the best security.
Shaun Thomas

I’ve been a long time Firefox/Waterfox
user and willremain so. Most people
stick with the browser they’re usedto.

FTER THE WHATSAPP
HACK, IS ANY ONLINE
SERVICE TRULY SECURE?

Nothing is 100% secure –we’ve learnt
the lessonsover andover again.We
should be talking about a risk-based
approach, not if it is secure or not.
cyberphilosopher @_4_d_4_m_

By its nature, no complex piece of
software(eve n small bits ofcode) is
ultimately safe. That is whywe not
only have updates, but also security
software, such as antivirus programs
and firewalls!
Anthony Higham

I ha ve to hope that LastPass is secure.
After all, it has allmy logins.
Simon Mellor@4KBacon

I don’t use WhatsApp and I don’t
think any app is 100% safe.

O YOU USE SPOTIFY OR
PREFER ANOTHER MUSIC-
STREAMING SERVICE?

I’ve been a Premium memberfor
years. It’s definitelymy favourite
music-streaming service.
Mark Chatham

They’ve got mecornered now
because I’ve made lots of playlists.
It’s difficultto switch andstart afresh.
And you can’t use the freeversion
with Alexa, which is cheeky.
Adrian Millington

It took me a long timeto get a decent
playlisttogether, so I don’t think I’d
switch. If it cameto it, I’d drop back
downto a free subscription.
