New app identifi es plants and animals
Love taking plant, animal and bird shots, but sometimes wonder
what the species is? An app for iPhone and iPad now identifies the
exact species from your image, as well as offers other interactive
features. The app ‘Seek’, created by a group of nature enthusiasts
called iNaturlist, is free to download via the Apple App Store.

Panasonic S1 on borrowed time
Fancy trying out Panasonic’s Lumix S series mirrorless cameras?
The company has set up a loan scheme letting professional
photographers apply to borrow a camera and lenses for free for up
to two weeks. The offer applies to the S1R and S1 cameras and
S Pro 50mm F1.4, 24-105mm F4 Macro, and S Pro 70-200mm F

Sony contest opens
Entries for the 13th Sony World
Photography Awards are now
open; it’s free to enter at http://www.
worldphoto.org. There’s a new
Environment category in the
Professional contest and a new
format for the Youth contest.
The latest recipients of the 2019
Sony Grant were announced,
including Alys Tomlinson, and a
global tour of winning images
from last year’s contest kicked
off in Japan on 1 June.

Last call for Environmental POTY 2019
You have until 30 June to enter the Environmental Photographer of
the Year 2019 contest. Organisers are seeking ‘photographs which
will inspire individuals and corporations... to take serious action
towards being more sustainable.’ Submit up to 10 photos for free
via http://www.ciwem.org/awards/environmental-photographer-of-the-
year. Chinmoy Biswas was 2018’s winner with ‘Dryness’ (see above).

A faster Affi nity
Serif has updated its Affinity 1.
image editor. The Mac version
gets a new memory management
system, a speed boost with
acceleration from the
computer’s GPU (graphics
processing unit) and more. Brush
operations are 10x faster, the
company claims. The revamped
memory management system for
Windows will reportedly boost
the speed of editing tasks by 3x
