FROM: CATH WILKINS
Clearly your April issue was written
before the arrival of the Covid-
pandemic but, despite that, I felt three of
your articles were relevant to lockdown.
Debora Roberston, with her ‘prescription
menu’ [p38-39], brought to life how food
can be cheering in many ways, and
cookery books, as Yasmin Fahr argued
[see overleaf], are crucial in supplying
practical help and inspiration. I’ve been
leafing through my collection, planning
feasts to share with family and friends
when a semblance of normality returns.
Emma Sturgess’s rant about leftovers
shaming was also lockdown-relevant,
but I disagree with her. Our food
retailing and manufacturing industries
are doing a sterling job keeping stores
stocked, but with so many vulnerable
people reliant on food parcels, now more
than ever it’s hugely important to make
the most of our leftovers – there is very
little that can’t be turned into soup!

@food_by_rae roasted a
chicken and served it with
our crispy potatoes, summer
salad and herby hollandaise

“I wanted to bake
Gill Meller’s rhubarb
and custard tart
with our home-grown
rhubarb for my
husband’s birthday
but as we couldn’t
share it with the family
(due to isolation rules)
I made these individual
ones instead”

by Gill Meller’s orange
curd, roast rhubarb &
primroses version
