BUILD A BURGER
Now that we have our colors, let’s start making our shapes
for the burger. We’re going to use a few standard shapes,
a couple custom shapes, and one filter. We’ll begin with
the buns, but before drawing your first shape, turn on the
grid (View>Show>Grid) in your document to help with the
size of the shapes and the distance between them. You can
adjust your grid to suit your needs in Photoshop’s Guides,
Grid & Slices Preferences (Command-K [PC: Ctrl-K]).

STEP THREE: TOP BUN
Click on the Rectangle tool (U) in the Toolbar and make
sure its tool mode is set to Shape in the Options Bar. Turn
on Snap to Grid (View>Snap To>Grid) to help you draw
your shapes. In the top area of your document, drag out a
rectangle at the size you want for the top bun. Next, click
on the appropriate color swatch in your Burger Swatches
group to set the bun color.
You’ll see the rectangle has four dots within the shape;
this is a new feature that lets you manually round the
corners. Double-click on the top-right dot and it will turn
white, meaning it’s the only active dot. Click-and-drag the
active dot down until the bottom point on the rounded
corner meets the bottom-right corner of the shape. Repeat
for the top-left corner.

your search criteria. In this case, type in “burger.” We
selected the Juicy Burger set but you can choose any
you want. Just click on the three-dot icon below the
set of swatches you want, and select Add to Swatches.
They’ll appear at the bottom of your Swatches panel
(Window>Swatches).
Click on the Create New Group icon (folder) at the
bottom of the Swatches panel, name it “My Swatches,”
and click OK. Create another group and name it
“Burger Swatches.”

Drag the swatches you just added into the Burger
Swatches folder, and then drag the Burger Swatches
folder into the My Swatches folder. You can now add or
delete swatches in this group. We need a total of eight
for our project. We only need one of the orange colors,
so click on one of those swatches and click the Delete
Swatch icon (trash can) at the bottom of the Swatches
panel. That means we
need four more swatches.
You could drag
swatches from other
groups in the Swatches
panel into your Burger
Swatches group, but an
easier way is to click on
the Foreground color
swatch at the bottom
of the Toolbar, select the
color you want in the
Color Picker, and click
the Add to Swatches
button. You can add as
many swatches as you
want without closing the
Color Picker. When you
have your eight colors,
click OK to close the
Color Picker, and then
drag the new swatches
in the Swatches panel into your Burger Swatches group.
When done, you should have a Swatches panel like the
one shown here.
