The traction rating is supposed to tell you how the tire gains traction in several roadway conditions, that is
rain, snow, ice, mud, and so on. These tests are based on each individual tire maker’s criteria and not federal
standards. That’s the problem with the Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQGS): There are no standards
that tire makers have to follow. They pretty much make up their grading system based on their own criteria.
