This photo illustrates a brake caliper and how it is mounted on a vehicle. Note how it straddles the disc (or
rotor) with the pads sitting on either side of the disc. When hydraulic pressure is applied to the caliper, it
squeezes the pads tightly together, creating friction against the disc and thus stopping the rotation of the
disc, which is attached to the wheels.
