With the wheel cylinders removed, the brake backing plate and
spindle are cleaned with a non-flammable solvent. This not only
makes the reassembly job cleaner, but allows for a thorough
inspection of the remaining components for cracks, pitting or other
damage.
To re-line the service brake shoes, the rivets retaining the old
linings must be removed. The old lining and rivets are discarded,
and the shoe thoroughly cleaned.
