DEMONSTRATION Snowy Landscape
I decided to be experimental and make up my own snow scene
for this painting. I kept the composition relatively simple, with
a few trees in the upper part of the canvas and strong shadows
cutting through the scene at a slight diagonal. The space
around the trees and shadows is all snow, so with that in mind I
wanted to create tints of colour variations to depict the snow.
A strong base colour of process magenta and white helped me
to forget about traditional approaches and colours and to work
with something more vibrant. My applications of paint needed
to be generous in order to dominate the pink background.
You could take this further by experimenting with different
base colours. I used expressive brushstrokes but you can apply
your own brushstrokes in a more controlled, one directional
manner if you preferMATERIALS
l Canvas board 18 3 20in (45.5 3 51cm)
l Daler-Rowney System 3 acrylics: phthalo green,
burnt sienna, deep violet, cadmium yellow, cadmium
orange, yellow ochre, process magenta, white
l Brushes: two 11/2 in
l Scrap paper for colour mixing
l Kitchen roll, water potp STAGE ONE
Burnt sienna and deep violet were used to fill in areas
of dark, to indicate the placement of trees and horizon.
Sweeping directional brushstrokes were used for coverage.
With a clean 11/2in brush I mixed a peachy colour using
cadmium orange and cadmium yellow with plenty of
white to fill in areas where snow would be placed. Again
brushstrokes were quite expressive
p STAGE TWO
Using the same brush I picked up
some phthalo green with yellow
ochre and plenty of white, again
to create a variety of light tints,
randomly placed. As I applied
pressure with my brushstrokes,
colours previously used came
through on the canvas, giving me
extra variations in colour tints.
Some smaller marks were made
to indicate negative spaces in and
around the treest STAGE THREE
Filling in more of the snow-
covered ground, more tints were
created using the same brush with
combinations of phthalo green,
yellow ochre and burnt sienna.
Plenty of white was also used
each time I introduced a different
colour, which built up varying tints
to create soft, pastel-like shades
