u DETAIL C
Using the side of a light
blue/purple pastel I blocked
in some of the lighter
aspects of the clouds

t DETAIL B
With a light pink pastel
I started to establish
some of the warm
edges along the main
cloud lines

p STAGE SEVEN
I used a paper torchon stick to
help with the blending process

  • this presses the pastel into the
    paper surface

p STAGE SIX
I began the pastel work. Using the side of a lovely dark blue pastel I started to
block in the darkest areas of the top clouds. You will notice in this closeup that
the tooth of the paper is very evident. When I first started doing pastel work on
watercolour paper I tended to use a Rough surface but found I had to use a lot of
pastel before the colours would ‘move together’ whilst trying to blend them.
I now use a Not surface as I can blend more quickly

t STAGE EIGHT
By now I had built up some
lovely dark blue-grey cloud
formations, working down
with mixes of green/grey,
light purple and soft orange.
Notice at this stage I was
keeping away from all the
light passages as I find that
light pastel over dark works
extremely well, unlike dark
over light, which never seems
to work for me
