TURN ON the Panning
scene mode by turning
the Mode dial to its SCN
(Scene) position. Not all
Canon cameras have
this feature but if yours
does, like the 6D Mark II,
you’ll be able to go into
the Quick Menu and set
the Scene Mode to
Panning.

NOW YOU can
fine-tune the settings,
changing the effect to
low, medium or high
to tweak how much
movement is in your
image. You also have
the ability to adjust the
brightness of the shot,
the drive mode and the
AF point selection.

GET CREATIVE WITH INTENTIONAL CAMERA MOVEMENT

Jam-pack your photographs with dramatic motion

UNDERSTAND

THE TV MODE
Canon’s Tv mode,
also called the Shutter
Priority mode, is perfect
for setting the exact
shutter speed you want.
This is useful when you
want to add intentional
movement to your shots
as it gives you the ability
to hone in the precise
amount of movement
that you desire. In
Shutter Priority (Tv) mode
you set the shutter speed
and ISO value you want
and the camera works
out the aperture value
for you. This will give you
a correctly exposed shot,
based on the metering
mode you have selected.
For all of the techniques
here we used Evaluative
metering.

01 SHUTTER SPEED TOO FAST
Using a fast shutter speed will render both your
moving subject and the background sharp and static.
With no movement the picture isn’t very dynamic
looking. As the background hasn’t been blurred it
can look quite untidy and distracting.

03 CHOOSE THE RIGHT LENS FOR THE JOB
All of the techniques in this project can be achieved
with a DSLR, or CSC, and a kit lens such as an
18-55mm on an APS-C body or 24-70mm on a
full-frame one. However, you may get better results
with a zoom lens like a 70-200mm or 55-250mm.

02 SHUTTER SPEED TOO SLOW
If your shutter speed is too slow when panning, or you
don’t track fast enough, both your subject and the
background will be blurry. This can look very artistic,
like an impressionist painting, but isn’t the exact
panning effect that we’re looking for.

04 INCREASE YOUR STABILITY
Although we’re injecting movement we want the right
amount of blur. Using a device like a monopod or
tripod will really help you direct the motion in the
orientation you want, for instance, solely on the
horizontal or vertical axis.
