POINTS TO REMEMBER

 Back and neck pain is very common. Four out of five people suffer from pain
during their lives. IN MOST CASES (90%) it is not caused by any serious illness
or damage.
 Half of the people who get back or neck pain experience recurrent pain within
two years. Even then it does not mean that it is a serious condition.
 You should be aware that most changes in X-ray or MRI images are normal
changes related to age just like your hair turning gray.
 Even with today’s technology, doctors cannot determine a definitive cause for
back or neck pain.
 Most pain arises from the muscles and ligaments of the spine.

 Very few patients need surgery for back or neck pain and that too, only if red
flags are present.

 Emotional stress can increase the amount of pain felt. Tension can cause painful
muscle spasms. Therefore, reduce your stress levels using relaxation or
biofeedback techniques.
 People who recover the fastest and cope best are those who stay active and get on
with life. Remember that the human spine is designed for movement.
 People who are physically fit generally experience less back pain. The answer to
back and neck pain is to stretch and strengthen the supporting muscles of the
back and buttocks and get the affected areas into condition and physically fit.
Hence continue the back exercises lifelong even if your back pain has gone.
 At all times, be aware of your posture when you stand, sit or lie down; be careful
how you lift heavy objects; use appropriate chairs and mattresses; maintain an
appropriate weight; avoid excessive smoking and alcohol; eat a nutritious diet
and supplement with calcium and Vitamin D 3 if required
 Above all – BE POSITIVE.
 Remember that “An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.”
