Scots play two one-goal games
in Red, get first league victory
Brett Bremer
Sports Editor
The Scots came into the
season knowing that with a
young roster and one pow-
ered by its defense, they
would need to capitalize on
their scoring chances when
they came.
They just couldn’t quite
finish Thursday.
Caledonia’s varsity girls’
soccer team moved its record
to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the
OK Red Conference with a
split in this week’s action.
The Fighting Scots scored
their first conference win of
the 2021 season at Scotland
Yard in Caledonia Tuesday
with a 2-1 victory over West
Ottawa. A 2-1 game went the
other way when the Scots
visited Grand Haven
Thursday evening.
The Buccaneers scored a
pair of goals on corner kicks
in the first half, sandwiching
them around a goal by the
Scots’ Tori Woodwyk.
Fighting Scot head coach
Paul Kramer was impressed
with how his girls responded
in the second half, creating
chances while being patient.
“The girls played out of
their minds in the second
half and just couldn’t put one
away,” Kramer said.
The margins are slim in
the OK Red Conference and
Kramer said his girls learned
Thursday that they have to
pay attention to every little
detail.
Maddie Mass and Tori
Woodwyk scored the two
Caledonia girls in their win
over the West Ottawa
Panthers Tuesday.
West Ottawa got within
2-1 with a goal on a corner
kick midway through the
second half, but the
Caledonia girls prevented the
equalizer.
The Scots went without an
assist all week. Kramer said
his attackers putting pressure
on opponents’ back lines led
to turnovers and the three
goals.
While they didn’t find the
net, Kramer said he was
especially pleased with the
play of senior Amber
Lewandowski and sopho-
more center back Stella Haan
this week.
“[Lewandowski] is a bull
in a china shop,” Kramer
said. “I have nicknamed her
‘Bam Bam,’ from the
Flintstones. She doesn’t quit,
she is physical, she is fast
and makes the right runs.”
He said Haan did a phe-
nomenal job shutting down
some 1-v-1 attackers late to
preserve the win over West
Ottawa.
“[Haan] is a sophomore,
but she plays beyond those
years. She plays like she is a
veteran senior,” Kramer said.
