Trojans and Red Hawks each take one win in Cedar Springs


The Thornapple Kellogg
varsity softball team split an
OK Gold Conference dou-
bleheader for the first time
this season at Cedar Springs
Monday.
TK took the opener 5-
over the Red Hawks, snap-
ping a 2-2 tie with a run in
the top of the fifth and then
adding a pair of runs in the
top of the sixth. TK pounded
out 13 hits in the win, one
more than the Red Hawks.
Cedar Springs rebounded for
a 9-6 win in game two.
Moriah Sprague got the
Trojans’ go ahead surge start-
ed late in game one, singling
to lead off the top of the fifth.
She took second on an error
and advanced to third on a
wild pitch, then scored on a
sacrifice fly into left field by
teammate Natalie O’Riley.
Grace Zube started TK’s


two-run sixth, knocking the
second pitch she saw into left
for a double. Maleah Bailey
drove her home with a single
into center. Paige VanStee
singled behind Bailey and
they both moved up a base
on a wild pitch. Bailey scored
on a sacrifice fly into center
from Sprague.
VanStee was 3-for-3 in the
ballgame. She knocked a
home run to center field with
two out in the top of the first
inning. Carly Snyder and
Sophie Haveman were both
2-for-4 at the plate for TK.
Haveman doubled once.
Sprague was 2-for-3 with a
run and two RBI.
Bailey was 1-for-4 with a
run and an RBI out of the
lead-off spot for the Trojans,
and number two hitter Elaina
O’Riley was 1-for-3 with a
run scored and a walk.

Bailey got the win in the
circle too, letting her defense
do the work. She struck out
two and didn’t walk a batter.
Cedar Springs managed 12
hits, but only one earned run.
Gracie Garchow had a
solo home run for Cedar
Springs in the bottom of the
second that tied the ballgame
at 1-1 at the time. She was
2-for-4 in game one.
The Red Hawks took a 6-
lead with three runs in the
top of the fourth inning of
game two. TK rallied to get
within 6-5 before the Red
Hawks tacked on three runs
in the top of the seventh.
Both teams had nine hits.
VanStee homered again,
going 2-for-4 with two runs
scored and three RBI. Snyder
was 3-for-4 with a run
scored. Sprague and Ebbie
Appel both singled and had

an RBI. Natalie O’Riley and
Bailey had one hit and a run
scored each.
VanStee started in the cir-
cle for TK and was hit for six
runs in 4.1 innings. She
struck out five, walked six
and allowed seven hits.
Peyton Stahl came on for the
final 2.2 innings. She was
charged with two earned runs
(three total) on two hits and a
walk. Stahl struck out one.
Katelin Koolman, who
had three hits in game one,
was 2-for-3 with a home run,
three Rbi and two runs scored
in game two.

The Trojans are now 7-
in the OK Gold after 45-
and 20-4 wins at Ottawa
Hills Tuesday.
TK took 26 walks and had
five girls hit by pitches in
game one, while smacking
17 hits. Sprague and VanStee
both homered. Sprague was
3-for-4 with five RBI and six
runs scored to lead the way
for the TK offense. She also
walked three times. Ella
Palazzolo, Natalie O’Riley,
Kate Caldwell, Sophie
Haveman and Carly Snyder
had two hits each. Palazzolo,
Appel, and Haveman had

four RBI each.
The game lasted just three
innings.
Game two was a four-in-
ning affair in which VanStee
hammered three home runs,
drove in five runs and scored
four times. Snyder and
Bailey both had three hits,
and Sprague and Natalie
O’Riley had two hits each.

each. Snyder, O’Riley and
Bailey scored three runs
each.

Scots fall to Holland in final


dual of the tennis season


Holland took a 7-1 win
over the visiting Caledonia
varsity girls’ tennis team
Tuesday afternoon in a
non-conference dual.
The second doubles team
of Allyson Abraham and
Grace Geer picked up the
lone point for the Fighting
Scots, winning a super tie-
breaker 10-7 after splitting
sets with the Holland team of
Delaney Lynch and Liv
Ceithaml. The Caledonia
girls took the opening set
7-5, but Lynch and Ceithaml
rallied for a 6-2 win in the
second set.
There were a number of


close matches. Holland took
a super tiebreaker at third
singles where Natalie Legg
bested the Scots’ Lydia
Sowerby 6-1, 3-6, (10-6).
Holland also took close
doubles wins at number one
and number four. The
Holland team of Cora
VanFaasen and Ava Wall
squeaked by the Scots’
Tanner Pizzuti and Josie
Zomer 6-4, 6-4 at first dou-
bles. The Dutch fourth dou-
bles team of Claudia
Kurniawan and Lena
Vanderbilt Mancinelli took a
6-3, 6-4 win over the Scots’
Allison Weibel and Lily

Stauffer.
The Scots fell to 0-9 in OK
Red Conference duals as
they were bested 9-0 by visit-
ing Rockford. The OK Red
Conference Meet is sched-
uled for today (May 15).

Hudsonville won a fifth-
score tiebreaker by a single
stroke to beat out Rockford
for the top spot at the OK
Red Conference jamboree
hosted by Hudsonville
Monday.
The Eagles and Rams each
scored a 157 on the day at
Sunnybrook. The Caledonia
varsity boys’ golf team was
third with a score of 167,
ahead of Grandville 172,

Grand Haven 186, West
Ottawa 188, East Kentwood
194 and Jenison 194.
Senior Bryce Fleisher led
the Fighting Scots with a 39.
Senior Alex Roe scored a 42,
