What’s So Special about Garlic?
Add lots of garlic to your recipes and salads. Okay, maybe no one will want to
kiss you after all that garlic, but it’s good for you. Garlic has antibacterial and
antifungal properties. Researchers have also found that garlic prevents blood
clotting, which makes it cardio-protective. Garlic is also being studied for its
abilities to reduce your risk for cancer.
What about Salt?
Salt in small amounts is essential for thyroid health. Most Americans get plenty
of salt in their diet. Adding too much salt to your food is bad: it can suppress
your thyroid when used in excess. I’d rather see us use sea salt instead of iodized
salt. You still need salt, so don’t try to give it up altogether. In fact, as you
transition to a healthful diet by eating natural foods, you may not be getting
enough salt—especially if you live in a hot climate where you perspire a lot and
lose salt in the process.
