Cougars wipe out early Scot lead in regional semi’s

Brett Bremer
Sports Editor
It was 3-0 and then it

wasn’t.
The Caledonia varsity
boys’ lacrosse team built an

early lead, but saw the
Catholic Central score three
times in the final five min-
utes of the first quarter and
then take the lead with four
unanswered goals in the first
three minutes of the second
in the Division 2 Regional
Semifinal hosted by Byron
Center May 26.
The Grand Rapids
Catholic Central boys led by
three or four goals for most
of the rest of the evening
before pulling away for a
20-14 win over the Fighting
Scots – earning a spot in the
regional finals against East
Grand Rapids.
Jobe Anderson scored a
minute and a half into the
contest for Caledonia, off an
assist from Brady Herrema.
Herrema then returned the
favor, assisting on an
Anderson goal. Anderson
scored again with a little
over six minutes remaining
in the first quarter, off an
assist from Griffin Poll, to

give his team a 3-0 advan-
tage.
The Scots kept the Cougars
off the scoreboard for more
than seven minutes to open
the contest, but the Cougars
pulled back to even when
they scored their third goal
of the first quarter with 21
seconds remaining in the
period. They took their first
lead at 4-3 56 seconds into
the second on a goal by
Patrick Hamilton.
It was a physical contest
throughout between a couple
teams of players who have
multiple years of youth expe-
rience playing with and
against each other.
The Cougars led 10-7 at
the half, and it took a late
goal by Scot junior Dylan
Olsen to keep them within
three. Three goals was as
close as the Scots would ever
get in the second half though.
The Cougars grew their
advantage to 17-11 early in
the fourth quarter.
Anderson finished with a
team-high four goals for the
Scots. Poll had two goals and
five assists.
Herrema and Olsen fin-
ished with three goals each.
Caleb Sprague had two
assists, and Tanner Barry and
Jack VanEss scored one goal
each for the Scots.
Catholic Central returned
to action this week, falling
15-7 to East Grand Rapids in
the regional final in Byron
Center Tuesday.
