Records continued to fall
for the Fighting Scot sprint-
ers, and senior distance run-
ner Lindsey Peters got to
step up onto the medal stand
twice, Saturday at the
Division 1 Lower Peninsula
Track and Field Finals host-
ed by East Kentwood High
School.
Peters lowered her own
school-record time to 2 min-
utes 12.65 seconds with a
runner-up finish in the 800-
meter run, after earning a
third-place medal with a time
of 4:54.09 in the 1600-meter
run.
The Caledonia girls were
12th overall as a team at the
D1 Finals. The Scots’
4x100-meter relay team
improved its own school
record at the state finals too,
with the freshman trio of
Mayari Coriano, Brooke
Heyboer, and Teresa
Abraham joining senior Ella
Mealey to place 12th in the
race in 49.78 seconds. It was
a race in which the Detroit
Renaissance team set a new
state finals record with its
time of 45.56.
Caledonia girls’ head
coach Ben Howell said he
saw great handoffs and blaz-
ing sprinting leading to his
girls’ record-breaking perfor-
mance.
“I am so excited to have
run it with these freshmen
girls,” Mealey said. “Our
whole team is freshmen girls.
I am so beyond proud of
them. It is a thing where
they’re going to be able to
enjoy the state meet every
year because they are so
fast.”
Mealey was running in the
state finals for the first time
Saturday. She was thrilled
that her relay team was able
to move up about seven spots
from its seeding, and finish
in less than 50 seconds. The
race also shows how far the
Scots have to go in Division
1.

“We’re definitely on top
of the world that we made it
[to the finals] in the first
place,” Mealey said.
Mealey didn’t run track as
a freshman, but was out as a
sophomore. She spent the
past two winters running
with the Grand Rapids Fire
Track Club, working on
strength and form to gain
speed.
The Caledonia boys set a
new school record in the
4x100 relay at the state finals
as well, with the team of
Ethan Berends, Brock
Townsend, Ian Scheidel and
Mason Powers running to a
19th-place time of 43.97.
Peters put together a cou-
ple great races trying to
chase down Birmingham
Seaholm senior Audrey
DaDamio who won the 800-
meter, 1600-meter and 3200-
meter state championships.
Peters was just seven tenths
of a second behind DaDamio
in the 800.
