Therearefivegroupsofpotentialbacterialcontributorstothepathogen-

1. Adhesins.Theyfacilitateadhesiontospecifictargetcells.


  1. Invasins.Theyareresponsibleforactiveinvasionofthecellsofthemacro-
    organism.

  2. Impedins.Thesecomponentsdisablehostimmunedefensesinsome
    cases.

  3. Aggressins.Thesesubstancesincludetoxinsandtissue-damagingen-
    zymes.

  4. Modulins.Substancesthatinduceexcesscytokineproduction(i.e.,lipo-
    polysaccharidesofGram-negativebacteria,superantigens,mureinfrag-
    ments).
