Engineering. Steel predators are created bya particular hexton modron, using a machine locatedin the city of S igil. It was n't always headquartered inthe City of Doors , however. On its or iginal home, theplane of Mechanus, the ingenious hexton was laudedfor its invention-until it turned its cre ations against itssuperiors. a roarin a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC19 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes27 (SdlO) thunder damage, drops everything it's holding, andis stunned for 1 minute.
On a successful save, a creature takeshalf as much damage. The stunned creature can repeat the sav-ing
throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect onitself on a success.and exiled. Now it operates a shop in Sigil wh
ere, for as teep price, anyone can commission the manufacture ofa s teel predator.Assassins on Demand. To creat
e a steel predator, thehexton's machine mus t be fed something that identifiesthe predator's target, s uch
as a lock of hair, a well-wornglove , or a much-use
d weapon. The moment the newlymanufactured s t
eel predator e merges , it bounds awayin search of its prey. It senses the location of its ta rgetacross pla na r bounda ries, but such detection is accurateonly to
within a thousand yards; to close the remainingdista nce, the steel predator locates its prey by sightand s mell.Once battle is joined, the predator ignores eve ry otherthreat to attack its target, unless other creatures
preventit from reaching the target. In that case, it does
what itmus t to fulfill its mission.Rogue Killers. If all goes according to plan, a steel
predator s lays its target and then voluntarily returns toSigil, whe re it's broken down
into parts that can be usedin anothe r s teel predator.
Battle damage can cause thisinstinct to fail, how
ever, causing the steel predator to lin-ger in the area, hunting and killing other creatures tha tresemble its ta rget, that fit the target's general descrip-tion, or that simply live nearby. Such rogues become themos
