Ruth Ann Carney, 77, of
Burlington, Michigan passed
away at her home on July 18,
2021.
Ruth was born on July 2,
1944, in Olivet, Michigan to
the late Harold Arthur and
Rhea Nelly DePew Lincoln.
She was united in marriage
with William “Lee” O’Brien,
who preceded her in death.
She later married Dale
Carney, who also preceded
her in death.
Ruth worked as a Machine
Operator for Quality Springs
TOGO in Coldwater for 25
years, retiring in 2008. She
loved to play Bingo and go to
the casino.
Ruth is survived by chil-
dren Mikeal (Robin Annis)
O’Brien, Kerpatrick O’Brien
and Sherrie O’Brien; grand-
children LaTisha (Richard
Pratt) O’Brien, Ronni
O’Brien, Kristina (Dayton)
Kessler and Robert
Harbarger; two great-grand-
children, Abigail Smith and
Grace Pratt; six siblings; and
many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by
numerous relatives on Dale
Carney’s side. Ruth was pre-
ceded in death by four sib-
lings.
Cremation has taken place
and a gathering will be held
later. Ruth’s cremated
remains will be interred in
Floral Lawn Memorial
Gardens. Arrangements were

Elizabeth Case
Elizabeth Mae “Betty”
Case, age 97, of North
Muskegon and formerly of
Battle Creek, passed away
Friday, January 24, 2020.
Betty was born September
22, 1922, in Columbus, Ohio
the daughter of Ralph and
Helen Louise Clark. She was
a 1940 graduate of North
High School in Columbus
where she lived until 1955.
On August 15, 1940, Betty
was married to Rev. Delmar
B. Case, and they lived in
many towns including Kansas
City, Kansas; Cincinnati,
Ohio; Ottawa, Kansas; and
Muskegon, Michigan prior to
moving to Battle Creek.
She earned her L.P.N.
license while living in
Muskegon and worked at
Hackley Hospital in
Muskegon, and both
Community and Leila
Hospitals, retiring in 1988
from the Battle Creek
Sanitarium Hospital. She was
a member of Ganges Baptist
Church of Fennville and had
previously been a member at
First Baptist Church of
Marshall. She was a volun-
teer at Mercy Pavilion for
many years. Betty was pre-
ceded in death by her hus-
band in 1998.
She is survived by five
children: Ronald D. (Flora)

Michigan; Ann (Dexter)
Denney of Cincinnati,
Ohio; Rev. Thomas S.
(Marilyn) Case of North
Muskegon, Michigan; James
G. Case of Sarasota, Florida

Michigan; 11 grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchil-
dren.

David L. Dickinson
David L. Dickinson, 83 of
Battle Creek died on Saturday
July 10, 2021, at the Glenn
Arbor Hospice Residence.
David was born on April
10, 1938, in Marshall,
Michigan to George and
Luella (Hartson) Dickinson.
He attended Marshall
schools.
David worked for several
years at Auto Zone in
Marshall. He also worked at
several different factories in
the Marshall area including
Douglas Corporation in
Tekonsha and Ronan Kunzel
in Marshall. David enjoyed
the outdoors and spending
time with family and friends.
He is survived by his sig-
nificant other, Ruth Marriott;
nieces Jacquline
Summerfield, Blanche Wells
and Norma Cusumano;
great-nephews and nieces;
and great-great nieces and
nephews. He was preceded
in death by his parents; a
brother Clark Dickinson; and
a sister Margaret Odom.

take place at Porter Cemetery
in Convis Township at a later

Eleanor Housman
Eleanor Frances Housman,
83, of Marshall, passed away
on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at
Glenn Arbor Hospice
Residence in Battle Creek.
Eleanor was born on
August 31, 1937, in Plainwell,
Michigan to Rudolph S. and
Bernice L. (Hicks) Bullock.
She graduated from Otsego
High School in 1955, contin-
ued at Eastern Michigan
University graduating with
her B.S. in Library Science
and English. She earned her
master’s degree in Education
from Eastern Michigan
University in 1965.
Eleanor married Charles Y.
Housman on June 22, 1974,
in Marshall, Michigan. Sadly,
he passed away on August
29, 2007.
She started teaching
English and Reading in the
old Central School in
Marshall, then at Madison Jr.
High School. Eleanor became
the Marshall High School
Librarian in September of
1959 and retired in 2005.
She was a member of MEA
and NEA, past member of
AAUW and past member of
Delta Kappa Gamma.
Eleanor enjoyed taking
trips with Chuck and was a
loving devoted pet owner,
especially to her cats and
dogs.
Eleanor is survived by her

her sister-in-law and brother-
in-law Linda (Thomas)
Brownell of Marshall, her
nieces; Christina Housman

Phyllis A. Reed
Phyllis A. Reed, 86 of
Battle Creek died on
Thursday, July 15, 2021, at
Sunnyside Adult Foster Care
Home after battling cancer
for over 35 years.
Phyllis was born on
December 10, 1934, in
Marshall to Kenneth and
Genevieve (Casey)
Pemberton. She graduated
from Marshall High School
in 1952. She married Buell
Wales in 1952, and their mar-
riage ended in divorce. In
1958, she married Clyde J.
Reed in Marshall. He pre-
ceded her in death in 1980.
Phyllis worked in the
finance department for the
city of Battle Creek for many
years retiring in 1994. She
also worked for Schuler’s
and Security National Bank.
Phyllis enjoyed hosting gath-
erings and spending time
with family and friends. She
also enjoyed planting flowers
and working in her garden.
She is survived by her chil-
dren, Michael (Linda
Morrison) Wales, Kim (Reed)
Melvin; stepson Roger (Deb)
Reed; six grandchildren; sev-
eral great-grandchildren;
close friends; and caregivers
Don and Cindy Hammond.
She was preceded in death by


her parents, husband and sib-
lings Tom Pemberton and
Sally Pemberton.
A private family service
will take place at a later date.

Brenda Wheeler
Brenda Lou (Sims)
Wheeler passed away on July
21, 2021. She was born on
February 6, 1945, in Albion
Michigan, where she lived
until she married Larry
Wheeler on June 22, 1963.
Brenda was preceded in
death by her parents, Cecil
and Louise Sims and four
brothers, Jim, Ted, Gary and
Don. She is survived by her
loving husband of 58 years,
Larry Wheeler and five chil-
dren: Gregg of
Crawfordsville, Indiana;
Kelly (Tom) Price of
Zionsville, Indiana; Aaron
(Renee) of New Castle,
Indiana; Corey (Amy) of
Noblesville, Indiana; and
Jason (Charlotte Burtt-
Wheeler) of Greenwood,
Indiana.
Also surviving are 15
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. Grandchildren
are Ryan Price, Kaitlyn Price,
Colin Price, Paige Debiak
(Dan), Blake Wheeler, Brady
Wheeler, Cole Wheeler,
Lauren Wheeler, Julia
Wheeler, Madi Wheeler,
Tyler Wheeler, Brittany
Parker, Sara Burtt, Marty
(Jessica) Burtt and Thomas
Burtt. Great-grandchildren
are Emma and Cali
Brenda was the most sup-
portive, loving and dedicated
wife and mother and she
absolutely adored all of her
grandkids. Having a busy,
demanding schedule as a suc-
cessful realtor for 28 years
until her retirement, she
always made plenty of time
for her kids and grandkids,
enjoyed supporting them in
their numerous sports and
activities. She especially
loved the holidays and host-
ing her large family gather-


ings.
After raising her family,
she sold advertising parttime
for the Messenger Crier
weekly newspaper in
Crawfordsville. In 1992, she
began selling real estate at
Landmark Realty. She con-
tinued her real estate career
until she finally retired in
2020 at Carpenter Realty in
Crawfordsville. Later in her
real estate career, she teamed
up with Larry under the name
“Team Wheeler” and they
were a successful realtor
team together for many years.
She was a long-time mem-
ber of Woodland Heights
Christian Church in
Crawfordsville.
Family and friends are
invited to a Celebration of
Life Memorial Service to
honor Brenda on Saturday,
July 24 at 5 p.m. at Eastside
Baptist Church located at
2000 Traction Road in
Crawfordsville.
