iOS Settings

AirPods are far more than just

headphones to listen to music,

podcasts and telephone calls. Thanks

to some thoughtful additions and

modifications, you can use them to

easily hear what is being said on the

other side of the room, as well as to

monitor decibel levels and to adjust

the tone of the audio they reproduce,

to suit your ears. These features sit

alongside the Accessibility settings

that Apple has been adding to iOS

for years, including Voice Control,

VoiceOver, Spoken Content, Audio

Descriptions and Sound Recognition. It

is a feature called ‘Live Listen’ that we’ll

focus on here.

Start Live Listen

With your AirPods connected to your

iPhone, access Control Centre, tap the ear

icon and then tap ‘Live Listen’. You will now

hear what your iPhone’s mic is picking up.

Set up Control Centre

On your iPhone, go to Settings>

Control Centre and then tap the green ‘+’

icon next to ‘Hearing’ to add it to your iOS

Control Centre. It appears as an ear icon.

Set Accommodations

Now go to Settings>Accessibility>

Audio/Visual>Headphone

Accommodations, switch it on and pick one

of the ‘Tune Audio For’ options.

Customise Transparency

Transparency mode enables you to

hear what’s going on around you. Tap on

‘Transparency’ and toggle-on ‘Custom

Transparency’ to see the options.

Customise the setup

In Headphone Accommodations, tap

‘Custom Audio Setup’, then follow the

instructions, choosing which version of the

audio clip sounds the best.

When the new version of iOS is

released later this year, more audio

benefits will come to your AirPods

Pro, too. For example, ‘Conversation

Boost’ is designed to help people

with mild hearing problems stay

more connected in conversation.

In this mode, the mics within the

headphones will focus on the person

talking in front of you, making it

easier to follow what they are saying.

You will also be able to reduce the

ambient noise.

Further refine

Alter the amplification balance and

tone using the sliders.Transparencymode

is activated from the Control Centre

volume controls.
