8 Triangle ABC has vertices A(¡ 1 ,3),B( 1 ,¡1), and C(5,2).
Find the length of the line segment from A to the midpoint of
BC.

9 A, B, C and D are four points on the same straight line. The
distances between successive points are equal, as shown. If A
is (1,¡3),Cis(4,a) and D is (b,5), find the values of
aandb.

When looking at line segments drawn on a set of axes, it is clear that different line segments are inclined to
the horizontal at different angles. Some appear to besteeperthan others.

Thegradientof a line is a measure of its steepness.

If we choose any two distinct (different) points on the line, thehorizontal stepandvertical stepbetween
them may be determined.
