Protocol 2
Have each member of the group read the chapter individually. In
preparation for the discussion, ask each member to use a two-column note-
taking format. In the first column, record your response to the text. In the
second column, note what was specifically stated in the text.
During the group discussion, use the following process:
•First, ask each member of the group to share one entry from the
notes. There is no discussion at this time. Each person just shares individ-
ual thoughts.
•Second, ask each person to share one entry that he would like the
group to discuss. A timekeeper limits the discussion of each question to
five minutes (the time may vary depending on the size of the group and
the amount of time available).
•Third, ask this overall question: What have we learned based on
this analysis of the text?

the group comes together, ask each member to work with a partner to
identify where the chapter says something that
