When I saw him three months later, he was still
despondent.“Ifeelasifapartofmybodyismissing.I
feel asif I have beendismembered,” he toldme.His
voicecrackedandhiseyeswererimmedred.Hehadone
greatsolace,however:thatshehadn’tsuffered,thatshe’d
gottospendherlastfewweeksinpeaceathomeinthe
warmthof theirlong love, insteadof up ona nursing
floor, a lost and disoriented patient.
