DC Network Theorems Unit 9 – Thevenin/Norton Conversion

Exercise 1 – Thevenin to Norton Conversion

EXERCISE OBJECTIVE

When you have completed this exercise, you will be able to convert a voltage source to a current
source. You will verify your results by comparing calculated and measured data.

DISCUSSION

  • When Thevenin’s theorem is applied to a network it is reduced to an equivalent constant
    voltage source (VTH).

  • The Thevenin equivalent resistance becomes the internal resistance of the constant voltage
    source.

  • Convert this voltage source to a current source by applying Ohm’s law.

  • The constant current (IN) provided by the source is VTH / RTH and its parallel internal
resistance (RN) is equal to RTH.

  • This is a Norton constant current source.
