58. Gospel in a Nutshell

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you,
Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things
from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes,
Father, for this was your good pleasure.”

HISmorning I talked on the phone to my granddaughter Caro-
line in North Carolina. She’s three and a half; I’m a good bit
older than that, but we can almost always bridge that gap with ease.
Usually we begin with the weather.
“Is it cold up there this morning?” I ask.
“Yes,” she tells me. “I have on my sweater today.”
(I feel envious. In this mid-eighties Alabama humidity, we are not
wearing sweaters today.)
Then we talk about her tailless cat, Charlotte, who likes to hide
under the bedcovers or in the closet. Next she tells me about the
man next door who has a pony named Shine. And finally she asks
for a report on our two spotted mutts, Max and Bentley.
I pause. I can feel the conversation winding down although I am
perfectly content to continue.
